Improving mental, social, and physical health are top prorities when customizing a workshop to fit your group. Programs targeted to meet all ages groups are aimed to encourage physical health and wellness among students and can improve student health, happiness and sucess.
Music:
Students will learn the basics about the music, the importance of the drum to American Indian people.
The beat of the drum is like a heartbeat, starting slowly and then beating more quickly as the singers get further into the song. The drumsticks connect the singers to the power of the drum as they sing.
There are many different kinds of rhythms and drumbeats, and each type of song requires a different one. The drumbeats must be in perfect time, and each singer must be in perfect unison.
The Importance of the Hoop (Circle).
The circle being a very important symbol to American Indians, the Pow Wow itself is set up so that everything is a circle, a sacred circle. The drums are the heartbeat in the center of the circle. The dancers and audience form a circle around them. The concessions and camping area form yet another circle around the gathering. The Pow Wow brings the circle of the people closer together, closer to their family, friends and their American Indian culture.
The students will make a hoop, making it their own by decorating it with their colors of choice. When all are finished the dancers will work with the students teaching them the basic moves and steps of hoop dancing. They will learn some of the basic formations, and finally all will be put to music of the drum.
Final Performance of the Workshop
Each and every workshop will end with a performance which will include flute music, drumming, singing, dance and a special presentation of students who participated in the workshop. There is also the possiblity that there will be some volunteers from the audience who will be asked to come and try there hand at hoop dancing.
